Bio/Research

The focus of my research is to better understand how dietary fats influence health and disease throughout life with emphasis on the prevention of chronic disease. Currently, a major area of study in my laboratory is the role of omega-3 fatty acids in breast cancer prevention. Studies examine how how early life exposure to omega-3 fatty acids influences mammary gland development and risk developing breast cancer later in life. We have shown that lifelong exposure to omega-3 fatty acids reduces mammary tumour development. This evidence provides strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids are important components of the diet and has a significant impact on reducing tumour outcomes.

I am also interested in the role of other bioactive fatty acids including

trans fats and conjugated linoleic acids in human health. Active research is

also focused on nutrigenomics, the study of how polymorphisms present in

fatty acid desaturase genes influence the metabolism of omega 3, 6 and 9

fatty acids. This fundamental knowledge has relevance for understanding how genetic variation influences health. Other areas of health research include brain health and Alzheimer's disease, bone development, and fatty liver disease.

In addition to my research responsibilities I also enjoy my service activities. Currently I serve on several committees and hold the position of VP-research for the Canadian Nutrition Society. I have also served on CIHR grant review panels, provided consultation for the food/fats & oils industry, and scientific leadership in the development of an unsaturated fat and cholesterol reduction health claim in Canada.
