Bio/Research

I have taught and written about cities for more than two decades. Ten Ph.D. students and many more M.A. students have completed theses in Canadian urban history under my direction. My particular interest in urban history is exploring the connection between a society's culture (in the largest sense of the word) and the form of its cities. My approach to urban history has been influenced by many colleagues but especially by a mentor and friend, the late H.J. Dyos of the University of Leicester. Cities are particularly exciting places for me and I can best understand and appreciate them by visiting them, walking in them, by taking part in local activities, and I might add, photographing them.
