Bio/Research

Dr. Cummings' interests in rural development planning within Canadian and international contexts take him all over the world working on research and projects. He has recently been involved in a provincial study of the Greenbelt and its impact on planning and agriculture. He has done extensive work on planning and rural issues and has an extensive set of studies on these issues. His interest in poverty covers both Canadian and international perspectives.

Cummings' health and social planning work include rural mental health, troubled youth programs, inmates' mental health, aboriginal health, farm-related counselling programs and others.

His interests also include program evaluation, economic impact analysis, program logic models, regional economic development, retail planning and institutional development, and he has pursued research and work in these areas. His work takes him to places in Canada, as well as Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia, Jakarta, Sulawesi and Kalimantan.

Cummings teaches program evaluation and research methods, regional planning, and other topics, and advises graduate students in international and Canadian Rural Planning and Development studies and issues. He is often invited to present papers on his work at international conferences and has also held a six-year term as treasurer with the Ontario Board of the Evaluation Society.
