Bio/Research

Dr. Spears conducted research throughout the horn of Africa, east Africa, and southern Africa, as well as Israel and Palestine.

He is the author of "Civil War in African States: The Search for Security" (Lynne Rienner/First Forum, 2010) and the coeditor (with Paul Kingston) of "States Within States: Incipient Political Entities in the Post Cold War Era" (Palgrave, 2004). He has published articles in the Journal of Democracy; International Journal; Third World Quarterly; Global Change, Peace and Security; Review of African Political Economy, African Conflict and Peacebuilding Review; African Security Review; and Civil Wars.

Spears has also contributed book chapters to several edited volumes including, among others the "Routledge Handbook of African Security and Collision of Empires: Italy's Invasion of Ethiopia and its International Impact" (Ashgate and Routledge, 2013).
