Bio/Research

Bill O’Grady is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and who teaches in the CJPP and CCJP programs. He has an active and longstanding research interest in the area of marginalized youth. In recent years his research has focused on urban, youth homelessness. This empirical work rests mainly in two areas: money making and contact with the criminal justice system.

With Steve Gaetz, Associate Dean, Faculty of Education at York University, his research has shown that the money making activities of homeless youth are structured on the basis of both their backgrounds as well as the struggles they encounter while on the streets. With the Ontario John Howard Society, he and Gaetz carried out a study linking insufficient prison discharge planning with homelessness.

Bill is currently embarking on a research project with a group of lawyers from Toronto, Justice for Children and Youth, which is interested in examining police ticketing practices related to the Ontario Safe Streets Act. He has just completed a paper on the media’s framing of a Toronto school shooting (with Patrick Parnaby), which is currently under peer review.

In 2007 Bill wrote an introductory criminology text book, published by Oxford University of Press, entitled Crime in Canadian Context.
