Dr. Bersenas has a strong interest in respiratory medicine, acute kidney injury and the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. Additional areas of interest include advancements in feline medicine and veterinary patient nursing care.
Bersenas’ research has worked to identify and assess the use of biomarkers in small animal sepsis particularly as this relates to the vascular system’s cell lining (specifically the endothelial glycocalyx) and fluid administration. Other research has evaluated the use of mechanical ventilation as well as non-invasive ventilation and respiratory support modalities (high flow oxygen supplementation) in small animal patients. Earlier work in gastric acid suppression in dogs has recently fostered involvement in new modalities for evaluating gastrointestinal ulceration associated with various diseases by use of video capsule endoscopy.
Bersenas enjoys collaborative opportunities with clinical and non-clinical colleagues working to advance the care of small animal patients. Her research abilities focus on clinical research.
