Bio/Research

Prof. Andrew McAdam's research investigates how evolution changes wild organisms over observable time scales. While evolution has generated the world's biodiversity over billions of years, the direction of evolution can change dramatically from one year to the next and from one place to another.

Research in his lab is interested in what ecological factors and human activities might cause natural selection to change in space and time and the consequences of these changes for evolutionary change. In addition, they are interested in how maternal interactions with offspring, and social interactions more generally, can accelerate or slow down the rate of evolution, or allow wild organisms to cope with rapid environmental changes. Much of the research in McAdam's lab is based on an ongoing long-term study of red squirrels in the Yukon Territory, but also examines wild mice and other small mammals, invasive zooplankton, and fruit flies.
