Bio/Research

Dr. Dienhart's research focused on gender relations in the family context, especially men's experience of fathering for nearly two decades and has now changed her research focus to studying the intersection of practice, training, and theory in couple and family therapy. She is currently involved, with colleagues in the Department, in an innovative start-up research project at the Couple & Family Therapy Centre (University of Guelph). The are engaging clients of the CFT Centre in research, by archiving therapy sessions (with client's permission). This archive data will allow them to study a wide variety of research questions located in the area therapeutic process and outcome. To name a few potential research interests, they are looking to study the structure of therapy, the ways that certain therapy skills work, the ways that therapy models are adapted in actual therapy sessions, how different clients respond to specific therapy models, why some clients leave therapy, and how to improve training generally and specifically in particular models of couple and family therapy. Dr. Dienhart's research questions usually employ qualitative methodologies.
