Deaton received his PhD in agricultural economics, from Michigan State University, in 2002, and worked as a post-doctoral associate from 2002 to 2004 at the Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards (IFAS) at Michigan State University.

From 1993 to 1995 he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho where he lived and worked as a school teacher and a community organizer. In Lesotho, he initiated a number of projects including projects that led to the development of water supply infrastructure and the marketing of sheep.
