Dr. Huyben's research focuses on fish nutrition, alternative aqua-feeds, the gut microbiome and fish health. His research evaluates new protein and fats, such as from microalgae and insects, as well as health promoting ingredients, such as probiotic yeast and minerals, to improve the growth, immune response and gut microbiome of salmonid fishes. The main research species include rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, and lake whitefish.
