Bio/Research

Dr. Pyle is a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada/Health Canada Senior Career Investigator for Improving the Heart and Brain Health for Women. His lab investigates the unique challenges faced by women who have cardiovascular disease, with a particular interest in the increased risk of heart attacks that arises with menopause.

The focus of his research team is to understand the molecular mechanisms of damage associated with heart attacks, how the response differs between men and women, and the creation of novel therapies.

In collaboration with research teams at Bar-Ilan University in Israel and Stanford University in the United States, Dr. Pyle's team has created a novel group of therapies to treat heart attacks. This international collaboration is focused on understanding how heart attacks cause injury and identifying new targets for treatment. Over half of Doberman Pinschers die from a genetic form of heart failure called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In collaboration with research groups at the University of Helsinki and University of Washington, the Pyle lab has researched the molecular basis of the disease, investigated novel markers for diagnosis, and explored genes that may be causative factors in disease development.

In addition to providing insight into the basis of heart failure in dogs, the similarities between humans and dogs with DCM allows for the research to be translated to human patients.

Pyle is also an associate member of IMPART at Dalhousie Medicine, the provincial co-lead for COVID-19 Resources Canada, and an advisor for Science Up First!
