Bio/Research

The role of nutrition and lifestyle modification in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases of man. Prof Meckling is specifically interested in how nutrients affect processes in mammalian and human cellular differentiation, cell proliferation and cell death. Research projects are examining the interactions between fatty acids found in fish oil, flavonoids found in fruit wines, estrogen, vitamin D and chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer prevention and treatment. Prof Meckling's long term goal is to understand the biological roles of nutrients at a molecular level and to use this information to improve the health and well-being of the general population. Studies in her laboratory involve questions of both a basic and applied nature. They use a combination of cell culture, animal experiment and human clinical trials to examine the specific activity of nutrients alone or in combination with other agents.
