Dr. Niel's research examines animal behaviour and welfare in companion cats, dogs and rabbits. Most of her current research is focused on understanding and preventing fear and aggression in cats and dogs in the home and in veterinary settings.

She also studies rabbit-human relationships and factors influencing cat welfare such as declawing, enrichment strategies, and indoor restriction versus free-roaming access outdoors.
