Bio/Research

Dr. Emes' research focuses on starch biosynthesis and the relationship to yield and productivity in model plants and crops. He is a plant biochemist and an author of over 100 refereed research publications and book chapters.

Emes spent the previous 21 years of his career at the University of Manchester, UK, where he was National Coordinator of a BBSRC program on plant metabolism, Coordinator for an EU program, and served on the Boards of Governors for two BBSRC research institutes. In Canada, he has served on several provincial grant committees and was President of the Canadian Council of Deans of Science from 2007-2009. He obtained his BSc and PhD from the Biochemistry Department at Sheffield University followed by two years as a Swiss National Science Foundation postdoc at the University of Berne, Switzerland before his appointment at Manchester.
