Dr. Desmarais's research expertise and interests are varied but are broadly associated with three general themes: 1) the changes and impact of gender norms, 2) the social, personal and psychological impact of social media, and 3) issues related to sexuality.
Between 2002 and 2007, Desmarais was the recipient of a Canada Research Chair in Applied Social Psychology.
He is the former associate dean in the College of Social and Human Applied Sciences and the former associate vice-president (academic), a role in which he served for 10 years. Desmarais also served as acting chair of his department, acting dean of CSAHS in 2007, and interim provost from 2014 to 2015.
He is the author of numerous scholarly papers and chapters, the co-author of two introductory psychology textbooks, and the recipient of two university teaching awards. Desmarais is also the former associate editor of "Canadian Psychology".
