Bio/Research

Sofie Lachapelle is a Professor in the Department of History and the Bachelor of Arts and Science. Her recent monograph Conjuring Science: A History of Scientific Entertainment and Stage Magic in Modern France (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) explored the relationship of science, magic and entertainment in nineteenth and early twentieth-century France, focusing on the world of conjurers and magic shows. Dr. Lachapelle is presently collaborating with Dr. Francis from the School of Fine Arts and Music on a project on opera, medicine, and the development of laryngology in late-nineteenth-century France.
