Dr. Smith's research interests are in the field of feed toxicology with projects on the etiology and prevention of Fusarium mycotoxicoses, analysis of feed-borne mycotoxins and the toxicity and analysis of feed-borne biogenic amines. Research is conducted across species and includes studies with poultry, swine, dairy and beef cattle, horses, rabbits, dogs and cats. International research collaborations include those with the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland and the University of Ghent, Ghent, Belgium.
Smith has worked closely with the animal feed industry and for a two-year sabbatical held the position of NSERC Senior Industrial Fellow with the Research and Development division of Shur-Gain, a member company of Maple Leaf Foods, in Mississauga, Ontario. He completed a three-year secondment to Alltech Canada, Inc., Guelph, Ontario.
Smith is from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He completed his BSc degree in chemistry at the University of British Columbia in 1970. His MSc was completed in animal nutrition in the Department of Animal Science of the University of Manitoba in 1974. PhD studies in animal nutrition were completed at Cornell University in 1977.
