Bio/Research

Dr. O’Grady has an active and longstanding research interest in the area of marginalized youth. In recent years his research has focused on urban, youth homelessness. This empirical work rests mainly in two areas: money-making and contact with the criminal justice system.

With Steve Gaetz, associate dean, Faculty of Education at York University, O'Grady's research has shown that the money-making activities of homeless youth are structured on the basis of both their backgrounds as well as the struggles they encounter while on the streets. With the Ontario John Howard Society, he and Gaetz carried out a study linking insufficient prison discharge planning with homelessness.

O'Grady is currently embarking on a research project with a group of lawyers from Justice for Children and Youth, Toronto, which examines police ticketing practices related to the Ontario Safe Streets Act. He completed a paper on the media’s framing of a Toronto school shooting (with Patrick Parnaby).

In 2007, O'Grady wrote an introductory criminology textbook, published by Oxford University of Press, titled "Crime in Canadian Context".
