Dr. Garvie's research background is in computational mathematics with applications to mathematical biology. One of his research interests is tiling theory, for example using polyominoes and other more complicated puzzle pieces. One exciting area of research that he is tackling is the famous eternity puzzle, which is notoriously difficult and has relevance to complexity theory.
In addition to conducting research, Garvie typically teaches large first-year courses. This has been mainly in business mathematics and linear algebra.
