Dr. Randall Simpson's major research project is NutriSTEP® (www.nutristep.ca). This project has involved the development of nutrition risk screening questionnaires for parents of toddlers and preschoolers to complete to determine their children's nutritional risk. NutriSTEP® for preschoolers is available in eight languages and Toddler NutriSTEP® is available in six. The questionnaires are licensed products available at: www.Flintbox.com. An online version of both questionnaires, on the Dietitians of Canada website, is available, and allows parents to complete the questionnaires and receive feedback messages based on responses to the questions.
Randall Simpson collaborates with Health Canada on various projects. Currently, work on the development of a short sodium screener to rapidly assess dietary sodium intake in Canadians. Previous work involved the assessment of copper and zinc status of young boys. Randall Simpson has also conducted research on weight gain, body composition, and metabolic rate in university students. Other research has included nutritional assessment of young children in Anabaptist communities.
