Bio/Research

Dr. Nance is a historian of animals, and of entertainment and live performance in the United States and Canada.

She is currently working on a book-length history of the animals of rodeo to document the lives of these animals, who have so often been hidden in plain view. Nance has previously published research on the history of the circus, zoos, and various other aspects of the entertainment and tourism trades since 1790.

She is a professor in the Department of History and is affiliated faculty with the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare at the University of Guelph. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
