Bio/Research

Dr. Matsakis' research focuses on the design of relative position descriptors and the modelling of spatial relationships between regions in 2-D and 3-D images. These descriptors and relationships are being investigated in many disciplines (ex., artificial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, geography) and find applications in various domains (ex., human-robot communication, geographic information systems, medical imaging, scene description).

Matsakis received his PhD in Computer Science from Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France, in 1998. He was an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, from 1999 to 2002. From 2002 to 2011, he was an associate professor in the Department of Computing and Information Science (now the School of Computer Science) at the University of Guelph. He was promoted to the rank of professor in 2011, and was Interim Director of the School of Computer Science from 2016 to 2018.
