Dr. McDonald conducts basic and applied research on crop protection and integrated pest management of vegetable crops, with emphasis on onions and carrots. She also has an extensive research program on the disease clubroot, of canola and brassica vegetables. Her work on crop protection incorporates conventional and biological crop protection materials, in addition to host resistance and cultural controls such as crop rotation and polarization.
McDonald has been an invited speaker at international and national conferences on "The Future of Crop Protection", "Sustainable Agriculture" and topics related to the use of drones in the detection of plant diseases and insect pests.
She also has expertise in vegetable production on high organic matter (muck) soils and on phosphorous requirements on these soils, and in the use of biochar in vegetable production.
